Do I miss my Golf R32?

The last day the Golf graced my garage. This was a forced smile in-front of a lot of mixed feelings

They say you never know what you’ve got ‘til it’s gone.

It has now been two years since I bought my Mk4 R32 Golf, which was sold in May of this year. I‘ve had viewers of the channel and friends asking me for a long time whether I regret selling the car and my answer every time is always an immediate no. So I guess the above sentiment has been proved wrong in this scenario?

Well, not absolutely. Like all fantastic experiences, you will forever miss certain aspects about cars as well. In my case, one thing that always comes to mind is that I’ll never own a car that sounds as good as the R32. The raspy, yet deep burble of the VR6 is so utterly unique, and compared to the four-cylinder two-litre world I am currently immersed in, is acres apart.

Don’t get me wrong, I am totally infatuated with the sound of my Evo and everything associated with it – there will be something to come on the channel regarding that very shortly. However, nothing I will ever own will have the same individuality of design, performance, sound and heritage as the Mk4. It is such an oddball.

Mmmmmmmm that blue. Favourite colour ever!

Starting with the engine, we’re talking about 3.2 litres and 6 cylinders of pure joy for the cochlea. Crammed into a tiny engine bay based on the econobox Golf hatch, it‘a a mechanic’s worst nightmare yet a driver’s joy. The body is square and subtle – so very Volkswagen.

The driving experience is only surpassed by the Evo. For a car that appears to need a diet, weighing in at almost 1500 kilograms, it picks up at surprising pace.

Autumn leaves, a sunny day and an R32. Perfection?

However, it lacked speed. It was missing a turbo and that was really the two aspects I was looking for to satisfy that undeniable need for speed. Therefore, as awesome as the car was, is, and forever will be, it was time for a change.
